Iosif Kiraly
Iosif Király stands as one of Romania's most celebrated artists in the realm of photography, creating a legacy that intertwines perception, time, synchronicity, and memory. His diverse body of work spans photography, installation art, drawing, and recently, video, each medium meticulously crafted to explore the intricacies of human experience and societal transformation.
Király's artistic journey began in the 1980s when he became an active participant in the mail art network, an international underground movement tied to Fluxus. This experience deeply influenced his approach to art, fostering a collaborative and interdisciplinary ethos. Post-1989, Király emerged as a prominent figure in the Romanian art scene, both as an individual artist and as a member of the subREAL group, known for its provocative and thought-provoking works.
Király's commitment to documenting and interpreting post-communist Romania is evident in his numerous projects. He has initiated and coordinated significant research endeavors such as D-Platform, RO-Archive, Triaj, and Tinseltown, collaborating with architects, visual artists, and anthropologists. These projects capture the societal shifts and cultural metamorphoses occurring in Romania, providing a rich tapestry of visual and narrative documentation.
The impact of Király's work transcends national borders. His art is housed in prestigious collections worldwide, including The National Contemporary Art Museum in Bucharest, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. His exhibitions have graced venues globally, from the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg to the Australian Center for Photography in Sydney. Noteworthy recent exhibitions include those at the Guangdong Museum of Art (2021), Bozar Brussels (2019), and the National Contemporary Art Museum in Bucharest (2018), which showcased a comprehensive retrospective of his early works.
