"after SCULPTURE/SCULPTURE after"

"after SCULPTURE/SCULPTURE after" In how many ways does SCULPTURE still live?

Understood for centuries as a monument, as a symbolic representation meant to fix a place or a memorable event in consciousness, does sculpture still maintain the validity of convention?

Are the limits within which it was understood in ancient times still respected?

What can happen after the great models have perfected their manifestations?

Does Romanian sculpture still find justification today, after the experience of Brâncuși?

To these multiple questions, the project 'after SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE after' proposes some answers through a series of exhibition events, held for seven months, from May 4th to November 30th, 2023, at Cazarma U in Timișoara (2 Mărăști Square).

The Triade Foundation invites you to the opening weekend of 'after SCULPTURE/SCULPTURE after,' which will take place from May 4th to May 7th. Join us for a weekend full of captivating dialogue, social events, and a variety of artistic experiences, all dedicated to exploring the fascinating questions surrounding the world of sculpture. Access is free throughout the entire opening weekend.

The curatorial concept that unifies these events starts from the fact that in contemporary art, the three-dimensional object has surpassed its condition or limits.

In this context, the curatorial selection will consider artistic productions based on the sculptural object but which pursue a temporal, spatial, or meta-spatial extension of it through forms of expression such as intervention in environmental space, site-specific installation, Land Art interventions, objects augmented by computerized technologies, performance, or relational art.

This kaleidoscopic presentation of the evolution of Romanian sculpture will be realized through four permanent exhibitions accessible to the public starting from May 4th.

Monumental and Ephemeral. Sculpted Memory

Curator: Ioana Vlasiu

The exhibition approaches the historical-thematic perspective of Romanian sculpture, starting from one of the archetypes of sculpture - the column. Within this exhibition, multiple facets of the column in Romanian sculpture are presented, with artists such as Mircea Cantor, Andrei Cădere, Ioana Ciocan, Reka Csapo Dup, Doru Covrig, Darie Dup, Teodor Graur, Sigma Group, Peter Jacobi, Peter Jecza, Aurelia Mihai, David Morar, Ciprian Mureșan, Paul Neagu, Ion Nicodim, Mihai Olos, Alexandru Păsat, Silvia Radu, Mircea Roman, Elena și Marcel Scutaru, Virgil Scripcariu, Aurel Vlad, and Victoria Zidaru participating.

Responsive Matter

Curator: Alina Șerban

The exhibition focuses on working with materials that are not in the classical realm of sculpture and how they are used to respond to artistic concepts, highlighting new forms of interpretation and perception of sculpture in its extended version. The selected artists are Nimbert Ambrus, Alexandra Satmari, Dan Vezentan, Adrian Kiss, and Ioana Sisea.

Volume through Layers

Curator: Ciprian Mureșan

The exhibition proposes a dialogue between artists in each exhibition space. Thinking of sculpture as a process of adding or reducing layers through various methods to bring out the desired form, the curatorial project symbolically transfers this idea by imagining added conceptual layers that can change the function of objects. The invited artists are Andrea Anghel, Marieta Chirulescu, Norbert Costin, Mihai Iepure-Gorski, Istvan Laszlo, Mihnea Mircan, Adriana Popescu, Silvia Radu, Cristian Rusu, and Paul Stoie.

Spark in the Dark Curators: Nathalie Hoyos and Rainald Schumacher

The exhibition is supported by the Asortymentna Kimnata Association and aims to connect the idea of ruin, symbolized by the experience of Ukraine, with the idea of revitalization through art. The exhibition is conceived as an organism in constant growth and transformation, occupying and redefining the exhibition space. The invited artists in creative residencies are Luka Basov & Krystyna Melnyk, Maria Leonenko & Anna Potyomkina, Oksana Pohrbennyk-Tishenko, Mariia Rusinkevych, Karina Synytsia / Sievierodonetsk. Guests: Radu Cioca and Alex Mirutziu.

Throughout the seven months, guest artists will also participate in temporary exhibitions, such as Andreea Albani, Andrei Arion, Radu Comșa, Arantxa Etcheverria, Camilia Filipov, Vlad Olariu, Bogdan Rața, Larisa Sitar, Lera Kelemen (AWOL exhibition, curated by Horațiu Lipot), Terence Muskiwa (curated by Catinca Tăbăcaru). Performance artists Alex Mirutziu and Gabriela Vanga will also perform.

The curatorial concept is developed by Sorina Jecza and Attila Kim through the TRIADE Foundation and Attila KIM • architects.

The realization of this project is supported by main sponsors: Catena, Cerealcom Timiș, UniCredit Bank, and Cramele Recaș.

Related cultural events taking place in the courtyard of Cazarma U during both the opening weekend and throughout the project until November 30th will be organized by our cultural partner, the CODRU Association.

The project is part of the National Cultural Program "Timișoara - European Capital of Culture in 2023" and is funded through the Inside Timișoara 2023 program, conducted by the Timișoara Project Center, with allocations from the state budget, through the Ministry of Culture, and from Timiș County Council, through the TimCultura 2023 Program.
