Overview
Through “Endless. Placeless. Traceless.”, Mihaela Hudrea proposes a new series of paintings that connect to her deep fascination for the Universe, as she playfully questions the concept of space-time.
Her work transcends the objective understanding of reality and echoes an imaginary way of perceiving life through emotions and the poetics of the Universe. The tension between what we know and what we are yet to discover is one of the main impulses that inspire her paintings, while holding the perspective of an idealist.
Experiencing the ‘now’ becomes a quest through which she is often confronted with the idea that the present moment seems impossible to grasp, while her paintings appear as they are made without touch. Through her words, the present is “just a dream, like I am dreaming about life”. She contemplates on the relation between time and reality and how the passing of time allows us to have a better understanding of our surrounding world. In this way, notions such as existence, reality and space interconnect with the concept of time in her work.
Mihaela Hudrea’s paintings address the idea that we can only imagine things based on what we already know, living within certain limits from the get-go. Within these limits, within our mind, we can still come up with multiple variants to a single thought, creating infinite possibilities and outcomes. Thus, in a contained space, with well-known boundaries, such as the brain, infinity seems possible. Maybe that is how the Universe works as well.
In this way, Mihaela draws visual metaphors between the Universe, our mind and the canvas. Both formal and conceptual, the restraints of painting as a medium and her (minimal) approach to it, operating within the constraints of time, space and emotions create the foundations of an over expanding universe within her own works.
