Step inside our gallery

Step inside our gallery

While preparing one of our  Instagram post, a few weeks ago, we found ourselves thinking about the beginnings of Jecza Gallery and, at the same time, grateful for how far we’ve come.

Over the years, Jecza Gallery has built a continuous dialogue between tradition and innovation, representing established artists such as Peter Jecza, Roman Cotoșman, Marius Bercea, Iosif Király, Țincuța Marin, and Constantin Flondor, while also carefully nurturing a new generation of creators. This dual perspective - between established legacies and new voices, reflects the gallery’s mission to build bridges between modern and contemporary, between historical research and current artistic production.

Today, Jecza Gallery operates in both Timișoara and Bucharest, which allows us to develop a wide-ranging program of solo shows, curated group exhibitions, and experimental projects. At the same time, our constant presence at major international fairs such as Paris Photo, Untitled Art Fair, Basel Social Club, and Vienna Contemporary positions our artists within a global network of collectors, curators, and institutions. Beyond exhibitions, one of our long-standing missions has been to educate the public and to open up the backstage world of what an art gallery actually means. With this in mind, we recommend the following materials, if you haven’t watched them: VorbitorinciiBuzunarul de Arta.

Today, we want to take this even further, to “demystify” the workings of a gallery and introduce you to the people and roles that make everything possible: gallery owner, gallery manager, art handler, gallery assistant, social media manager.

But before that, we must answer this question: what exactly is an art gallery, and what role does it play in the art ecosystem?

If we gather the various definitions given by specialized publications, we arrive at a complex picture: an art gallery is an exhibition space for presenting and selling artworks, but also a cultural and commercial enterprise working with a portfolio of artists. Beyond being a place where artworks are displayed and sold, the gallery acts as an intermediary between artist and public: it represents artists, supports their practice, distributes their works to collectors, museums, and institutions, contributes to the development of their careers, organizes exhibitions, and creates bridges between current artistic production and the international cultural scene.

This naturally raises the question: who are the people and what roles do you find inside a gallery?

The Gallery Owner – Andrei Jecza

The simplest definition of a gallerist is that of a commercial intermediary between the artist and the collector. But what Andrei does goes far beyond simple transactions: he is the one who discovers the artists you encounter in our exhibitions, supports them, helps shape their paths, and promotes their work to collectors and curators. An important part of this, also means visiting the artists he represents, keeping a close dialogue with them and understanding their creative process firsthand.

More than anything, Andrei shares his knowledge with the team and guides the overall direction of the gallery, constantly thinking together with the communications director about new strategies to bring the public closer to Jecza Gallery and to the artists we represent. He is also directly involved, together with the gallery manager, in preparing applications for international art fairs, securing the gallery’s presence on the international stage. You’ll actually get to meet him at Paris Photo 2025 this year …and if you spot him, don’t hesitate to say hi (he’ll be the one always on the move, making sure everything is just right)

"Looking back, I realize that my choice of profession was inspired by the way I was raised. However, my parents didn’t force or dictate any particular direction. I had the freedom and confidence to choose my own path. It’s very true that when you grow up surrounded by artists, musicians, poets… the choice isn’t difficult at all. I remember that while most children dreamed of becoming astronauts, I dreamed of being a pastry chef. And when teenagers were thinking about starting a business, law, or medicine, I already knew that I wanted to open an art gallery."

Gallery Manager - Meet Ema!

Ema is the gallery manager and the one who keeps everything balanced day by day. She coordinates the team’s activity, oversees each member’s work, and makes sure that every detail of an exhibition is in place. This includes the transport and insurance of artworks, the overall budget, as well as the logistics for openings. So if you’ve ever enjoyed a glass of prosecco while admiring the artworks to the sound of a DJ set, you have Ema to thank for it.

“I enjoy observing and contributing to how good communication and a well-paced team workflow can make any project we organize truly shine. There’s real satisfaction in giving attention not only to the exhibitions themselves, but also to the tools, operations, and shared practices that help things run smoothly - and make it easier for us to understand the flow from one project to the next. Even though we work in an artistic environment and handle artworks every day, staying organized, focused, and guided by a clear vision remains essential. Much of what makes a project successful happens behind the scenes and I am very proud to be able to be part of that work”

Art Handler - Meet Vanessa!

Vanessa is our art handler in Timișoara and the one who takes care of everything related to the physical management of artworks. She handles the unpacking and packing of each piece, researches the correct way of handling more delicate works, and makes sure everything is safely prepared. On top of that, Vanessa always knows exactly which materials to use - from the right kind of tape to the ideal wrapping paper, small details that might seem minor, but which make all the difference in preserving and safely presenting each work.

Mediating means guiding people through new perspectives, keeping the essence of the concepts untouched. The logistical part involves ‘guiding’ artworks through different places, keeping their medium intact. With a subtle eye for understanding and seeing the unseen, I integrate this guiding process into the technical and social areas of the gallery. My work unfolds between the archives, shipments, and the people I get in touch with, with a great love for curiosity and understanding.”

Art Handler - Meet Andreea!

Andreea is our colleague in Bucharest, connecting the gallery with its audiences both online and on-site. She manages our website and specialized art platforms, coordinates guided tours, and handles press relations, ensuring that each exhibition reaches the public in thoughtful and engaging ways. Beyond communication, she’s also in charge of the hands-on side of gallery life: installing and taking down exhibitions, arranging artworks, and keeping the space ready to welcome visitors. Together with Carmen, Andreea is the voice behind our new project - the Jecza Blog, so if you’re ever in the mood for a good read to go with your morning coffee, we recommend this one!

“What I love most about my job is the diversity of skills I get to learn. I find the process behind creating an art exhibition fascinating - the complex logistics it involves and how it constantly pushes you to become more organized.  As the gallery begins a new chapter in Bucharest, everything feels both exciting and challenging at the same time. But what helped me through these changes was the team’s constant support and willingness to help, making sure I felt as comfortable as possible throughout the transition…At the end of the day, it’s a role that keeps me continuously connected to art, which is, without a doubt, my greatest passion."

Gallery Assistant - Meet Carmen!

Carmen is our gallery assistant in Bucharest. She is the one who keeps many things running smoothly behind the scenes while staying in close contact with our visitors. Carmen interacts directly with the public, sometimes taking on mediation to help guide and explain the works on view, making every visit more engaging. She also helps organize events, from openings to special gatherings, and takes care of the daily administrative duties that keep the gallery moving forward.

Social Media Manager - Meet Flo!

Since 2023, our online presence has gotten a boost thanks to Flo joining our team. She’s been with us ever since, behind every post, and caption on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and most recently, Google and YouTube - click to see her latest project, Open Disscusions. More than managing platforms, Flo is a content creator — the professional voice of Jecza Gallery online and the one shaping how we communicate with our audience. She brings a lot of good ideas to the table, from storytelling concepts and video formats to creative collaborations, while also working to make the curators’ voice more accessible — translating complex or highly theoretical ideas into content that feels natural, human, and relatable.

When she first applied for this position, she told Andrei she didn’t know much about art, just that she loved creating content and helping businesses bring their voice to life.

That curiosity, paired with a sharp sense for narrative and tone, has since become one of the gallery’s greatest assets.

To wrap it up, both the role of a gallery within the art ecosystem and its inner workings are complex. Still, we hope we’ve managed to lift the curtain a little on what happens behind the scenes of our daily activity. If you enjoyed this read or discovered something new and interesting, we’d love to hear from you in the comments!
