Grey Crawford

Grey Crawford (*1951, Los Angeles) is a pioneering conceptual artist known for his groundbreaking darkroom experiments in both black and white and color photography. Inspired by the geometric forms of California hard edge painters John McLaughlin and Karl Benjamin, Crawford distinguished himself from his contemporaries by infusing these shapes into his Umbra series through innovative masking techniques. Rediscovered in 2017 after being hidden for 40 years, Crawford’s rich archive of works is now included in the collections of prestigious institutions like the Getty Museum, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and Turku Museum in Finland. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles and Denver.
