We have chosen to present two important historical figures at this edition of Paris photo: Constantin Flondor and Iosif Kiraly. The latter began as a disciple of the former while still in high school.

Constantin Flondor is a Romanian visual artist, and educator, born in 1936, in Cernăuți (now part of Ukraine). He is considered one of the most important figures in Romanian contemporary art, particularly known for his contributions to conceptual and experimental art. Constantin Flondor was a founding member of Sigma Group (1969) which explored multidisciplinary approaches to art, blending mathematics, philosophy, and visual art. Flondor’s work spans various mediums, including photography, painting, installation, and video art. He is exploring themes such as the relationship between man and nature, time, and the cosmos. As an educator, Constantin Flondor influenced many younger artists through his teaching at the Fine Arts High School and the University of Arts in Timișoara. // Iosif Király is a Romanian visual artist, photographer, and educator, known for his interdisciplinary approach that blends photography, architecture, and conceptual art. His work often explores themes related to memory, perception, and the passage of time, utilizing techniques such as montage and digital manipulation to create complex, multi-layered images. Iosif Király was born in 1957 in Resita, Romania. He studied in Fine Arts High School in Timisoara where his teacher was Constantin Flondor. He continued his post-graduate studies in Bucharest at the Faculty of Architecture. in Bucharest. Király’s work is characterized by a deep investigation into how images are constructed and perceived. He uses photography as a tool to explore the relationship between reality and representation.

The disciple is no more than the master; but every accomplished disciple will be like his master, as Luke the Evangelist said. Perhaps that's what a “master” is, someone who emancipates you and allows you to freely recognize your own practice. Flondor and Kiraly both knew how to “open up” transmission, to widen filiation.
