Paul Neagu, Peter Jecza, Doru Tulcan, Grupul Sigma, Roman Cotoșman, Constantin Flondor in NEOAVANGARDA TIMIȘOREANĂ – CONCEPT ȘI CONTEXTUALIXARE exhibition

This project is dedicated to an era of cultural flourishing, the reverberations of which are felt to this day. The museum's curatorial team wishes to mark the outstanding contributions of a generation that, like front-line soldiers, explores the unknown, groping the predefined boundaries of art, thus rightly earning the title of Avant-Garde.

The year 2023 is not the only one in which Timișoara was in the spotlight, considering the efforts made by these artists, who contributed to putting the city on the map. Our collective memory is greatly affected by the changes and turbulence of the last century, but it is imperative to remember that 50 years ago, several creators asserted themselves on the Timisoara cultural scene, shaping both the community and the generations that came after them , by getting involved in the education of the young women who followed them.

This exhibition dismantles the myth according to which the culture of the member states of the Warsaw Treaty in the 60s and 70s is purely retrograde. Political and cultural restrictions force art to conform to a specific vision and philosophy, but this premise contributes to the development of a counter culture, which takes place in the privacy of workshops and classrooms, forming a culture parallel to the Western one, an experimental, calculated art, lyrical. Thanks to these artists, the Timişoara Neoavangarde will not come into existence in a vacuum. It rises from a fertile soil, marked by the last breaths of a central European culture, connected to the great metropolises in the heart of the continent.
